How Dr. John Petrozza Helped Change the Conversation Around Male Fertility

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to shine a light on health issues that too often go undiscussed. Among them is male infertility, a factor involved in nearly half of all fertility challenges.

While conversations around fertility have traditionally focused on women, advances in research and technology are helping shift that narrative. One of those advances involved a groundbreaking innovation developed with the help of Dr. John Petrozza, who recently joined Fertility Centers of New England.

Years before at-home fertility testing became more widely available, Dr. Petrozza collaborated with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard-affiliated institutions to develop a smartphone-based semen analyzer designed to make male fertility screening faster, more accessible, and less intimidating for patients. The technology used a smartphone attachment and specialized software to evaluate sperm concentration and motility in seconds with accuracy comparable to traditional laboratory testing. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine, demonstrated approximately 98% accuracy in identifying abnormal semen samples based on World Health Organization fertility criteria.

The innovation addressed one of the most significant barriers in male fertility care: access. Many men delay fertility evaluation due to embarrassment, inconvenience, or misconceptions about male infertility. The goal of the technology was simple but powerful: make fertility testing more private, affordable, and approachable. Researchers envisioned a future where men could perform an initial fertility screening from home and gain earlier insight into their reproductive health.

“Male fertility has historically been overlooked in reproductive medicine,” says Dr. Petrozza. “When couples are struggling to conceive, it is critical that both partners receive a thorough evaluation. Earlier testing can often provide answers sooner and help guide the most effective treatment path.”

The smartphone-based analyzer was evaluated using hundreds of clinical semen samples from patients. Beyond measuring sperm concentration and motility, subsequent research expanded the technology to assess additional indicators of sperm health, including sperm viability and DNA fragmentation.

While fertility technology has continued to evolve, the message remains the same: male fertility matters.

Today, Fertility Centers of New England offers comprehensive male fertility evaluation and treatment as part of a complete fertility workup. From advanced semen analysis to diagnostic testing and personalized treatment recommendations, our team recognizes the important role male reproductive health plays in family building.

As we recognize Men’s Health Month, Dr. Petrozza’s work serves as an important reminder that innovation in fertility care is not only about creating new technologies. It is about removing barriers, expanding access to care, and helping more people take the first step toward answers.

If you have been trying to conceive without success, evaluating both partners early can provide valuable insight and help you move forward with confidence.
