A freelance writer for the Washington Post, Jennifer Van Allen posted a column August 12 in the Wellness section outlining 10 effective  weight loss strategies. These strategies include:

1) Strength training since muscles burn more calories than fat
2) Keep tempting foods out of reach and more healthy choices visible. Drink water rather than fruit juices or soda
3) Keep a food diary even for a short time is the best way to stay mindful of what and how much you eat
4) Personalize portions by eating more vegetables and smaller servings of foods with starch (potatoes, rice and corn) and fat (red meats)
5) Stop bad eating habits
6) Sleep 8 hours each night
7) Meditation to relieve stress
8) Plan meals
9) Eat frequent small meals every 3 to 4 hours help prevent hunger and overeating
10) Be active avoiding a sedentary lifestyle since moderate intensity activities such as walking help curb appetite and keep you energized
