Safe Treatment Options for Yeast Infections During Pregnancy

Vaginal yeast infections are a common concern, especially during pregnancy when hormonal changes can increase the risk of developing one. However, treating a yeast infection while pregnant requires extra caution to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. What are safe treatment options for yeast infections during pregnancy?
Can You Take Fluconazole During Pregnancy?
Fluconazole (Diflucan) is a widely used antifungal medication for treating yeast infections. However, research suggests that it may not be safe during pregnancy. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ 191:7, 2019) found that taking Fluconazole during early pregnancy could triple the risk of miscarriage compared to women who did not use the medication. Additionally, the study reported an 81% higher chance of cardiac birth defects in babies exposed to Fluconazole in utero.
Due to these risks, Fluconazole is not recommended for treating yeast infections during pregnancy.
Safe Yeast Infection Treatments During Pregnancy
For pregnant women, topical antifungal treatments are considered safer alternatives. The following over-the-counter (OTC) options are commonly recommended:
- Clotrimazole (brand names: Mycelex, Lotrimin)
- Miconazole (brand name: Monistat)
These medications are applied directly to the affected area and do not carry the same risks as oral Fluconazole.
