Over the past several years, technical advances in cryopreservation methodologies have dramatically improved the efficiency of egg freezing. Egg freezing or oocyte cryopreservation has potential advantages for those contemplating In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Potential advantages of egg freezing include an alternative to embryo freezing for those with ethical objections to embryo cryopreservation, simplifying egg donation, and giving an opportunity for fertility preservation to women at risk of premature ovarian failure resulting from genetic factors, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. Egg freezing also offers young women the potential of preserving their fertility for social reasons until such time that they may be better prepared to have a baby. Over 1,000 babies have been born world-wide from previously frozen eggs such that now egg freezing challenges the supremacy of embryo cryopreservation as the preferred form of fertility preservation.
